Nasum - Doombringer (Live) (2008)

Nasum - Doombringer

Sweden's Nasum recorded this album in Osaka, Japan on January 9, 2004 at Club Quattro and is the final nail in the coffin (hopefully) for the Nasum legacy. I have become rather bored of live albums over time but this is beautiful; Nasum, in about 25 minutes running time, are able to keep it intense sounding enough to keep your interest all the way through and accomplish what some bands take almost an hour and a half doing, or multiple albums even. The sound is crisp, Mieszko sounds pissed the way we like it and the band keeps it tight, and it makes you feel jealous that many of us here in the United States never got to see this in person as we intended following the success of "Shift."

Immortal - At The Heart Of Winter (1999)

This album marked a big change in the direction for Immortal compared to their earlier albums as it had a "cleaner" sound and more a thrash one as well compared to the straight up lo-fi black metal they had been doing up to the previous album, "Blizzard Beasts." It was well-received by both old fans and critics alike and their next albums had similar sounds. They also have another one coming out later this year!

Death - Individual Thought Patterns (1993)

Death - Individual Thought Patterns

One of the greatest albums of the 90's, "The Philosopher" is probably one of if not the most well-known Death songs ever, with a music video and even a spot on "Beavis & Butt-head." More technical, experimental and sometimes jazzy compared to their earlier records; don't take that as a softening sound.

Death - Symbolic (1995)

Death - Symbolic

An absolute essential, classic metal album that has not been worn out since its release. Timeless pieces of art! The tempo is slightly slower from previous Death albums (I will upload a couple soon), but that does not mean this album isn't still fast; it's also one of the most well-crafted melodic death or thrash metal albums ever. Treat yourself to some of the sweetest sounding guitar riffs and solos at the hands of Chuck Schuldiner, as well as some of metal's smarter lyrics and the most mind-numbing fast and technical drumming from behemoth Gene Hoglan.

Carcass - Necroticism - Descanting The Insalubrious (1991)

Carcass - Necroticism

From Wikipedia: It could be described as a concept album, as many of the tracks describe economical ways to dispose of dead bodies ("Pedigree Butchery", for example, proposes that dead humans be turned into pet food, "Carneous Cacoffiny" proposes to use human body parts as musical instruments and in "Inpropagation" human remains are used as fertilizer).

If you were young and read the lyrics, they just sounded confusing and foreign and "too smart," but as a much older person now... it's about the same. The musical direction is changed from their pretty straightforward grind sound to a more uniform death metal with some memorable guitar solos and the familiar grind sound still there. Incredible even after multiple listens in one session!

Michael Amott on guitar went on to form the much celebrated and incredibly dumb Arch Enemy (I'll admit I like their material up to "Burning Bridges"). Amott formed the band with Johan Liiva in 1996 after they disbanded Carnage in 1990, the other members of Carnage went on to make side awesome band Dismember a full on project.

Emory & Henry College / Abingdon, VA

I would be setting world records on the amount of crystal meth I'd be taking in if I lived in this area. Kudos to you suspender-wearing no-chins, for I couldn't do it. I love the country but not when it's also coated in places like Logan's and Outback-- ruins the landscape. I'd prefer a bunch of country and nothing than country and rednecks who think they are still living the country life. This is where weird sexual fetishes are born and civilization ceased creating culture. I feel I have stepped in light brown stuff that has more personality in the smear I make with the patterns on my shoes than this whole town had. I think I saw enough nature freaks with boots and colored tights for one weekend, too. Someone needs to filter this area's internet access.

Dissection - Storm Of The Light's Bane (1995)

Dissection - Storm Of The Light's Bane

ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL. I only have the original CD with eight tracks so I don't have the reissue tracks from the later releases but am working on purchasing or just downloading them later and putting them up if anyone wants them. This is ripped from my own CD so there is a SLIGHT possibility there will be a pop or skip, if you find one PLEASE let me know so I can upload a clean track as this isn't a hard album to find online.

Dissection is a fun band to read about, mostly due to their goofy former lead singer Jon Nödtveidt, who shot himself in the name of Satan inside a lit circle of candles on August 16, 2006.

Deströyer 666 - Terror Abraxas (2003)

Deströyer 666 - Terror Abraxas

Five songs that go in an even heavier, epic-sounding direction. There is a misspelling on this upload, but track 3 should be "Trialed By Fire," and not "Trailed By Fire." It was noticed post-upload. Sorry about that! While that song is being mentioned, think of it along the lines of Dissection's tune from 1995's "Storm Of The Light's Bane" -- "Thorns Of Crimson Death."

Deströyer 666 - Of Wolves, Women And War (2002)

Rotten Sound - Cycles (2008)

Rotten Sound - Cycles

Finland's Rotten Sound bears a strong resemblance to bands like Napalm Death, Nasum's heaviest material and a faster Coldworker. An extremely fast grind-ish death metal band with extremely tight sound shows these guys aren't just beating around their instruments and competing with fruits who are using drum machines and Myspace rankings to get shows in their hometown. Nasum fans, who are all missing out due to Mieszko Talarczyk's death in Thailand in 2004 at the age of 30 in the tsunami, would be doing themselves a favor by at least listening to a song or two from these guys. They've been around since 1993 and only getting heavier, faster and filthier over time. The lyrics are heavily influenced by politics and the state of world affairs (naturally mostly the negatives!) but it would be strange to hear an anthem praising the Patriot Act from this band as well.
