Macabre - Human Monsters (2010)

Macabre's new EP, a slight change from 2003's "Murder Metal" but the Macabre we all know is back. They do a Venom cover, which personally is the low point of this release for me, but it's still a decent cover. I've just already listened to the original and Sigh cover of this particular song to death. "The Big Bad Wolf" is great, and if this is the tone of the next release (due out later in the year, which can only mean very soon) then I think we're all in for a treat.

Enslaved - Axioma Ethica Odini (2010)

There is never enough praise for this band. It's hard to determine if they are underrated, under-appreciated, or just simply not understood by the general public as far as metal, black metal, or even rock go. They went from the fast, intense, frosted-over evil that is, well, "Frost" in 1994, through more electronic, drone-y sounding heaviness with "Monumension" (2001) and into the official progressive realm without a single filler track on "Ruun" (2006). They achieved a certain kind of guitar tone perfection that I got to witness live at Jaxx in 2007 and have yet to hear a show with sound as crisp and goosebump-inducing and I've been lucky enough to see quite a few incredible acts in the last 15 years. Also, those who know, Jaxx isn't known for being particularly decent as far as sound goes, or much else. Anyway, to the subject at hand; Axioma Ethica Odini has somehow managed to once again be an Enslaved album with no filler. The opener kicks right off with a rock beat and familiar snarling vocals, and the chorus is upbeat with great, trained clean singing vocals. This has become pretty standard with Enslaved, but is incredibly hard to swallow with most any band in the same genre. These guys have perfected it and don't seem to be changing the formula just yet, which is fine. If you enjoyed "Ruun," "Isa" and "Vertebrae," this should be right up your alley. There's enough classic sounding Enslaved to appease (some) purists, but really, in other parts of the world these guys are hailed and making it onto radio and TV. Great for those who aren't looking for Immortal or Emperor styled black metal, but enough to feel bad ass while taking in some real melody too. I ripped this from my own copy of the CD that I got in the mail to ensure it's of the highest quality!

Plug for a friend in hell

Yeah yeah I've neglected this due to life and forgetting about this, but it's coming back, full force, new music being uploaded so you don't have to worry about it. Deftones - Around The Fur (1997)

Are they metal? Are they alternative rock? Are they "nu metal?" Are they really that good, or are they a guilty pleasure? Depending on how old you are, when you got into them and whether you listen to only their first two or three records or their last three, the answers are all different. Personally, my love of the Deftones stopped after White Pony, but Adrenaline and Around The Fur still get regular rotation over a decade later. Twisted thought, isn't it? They formed in 1988 and I remember finding out about them through The Crow: City Of Angels soundtrack, which featured my favorite song by them, "Teething," which hasn't appeared on any full-length albums by the band. Their first two records were definitely angrier, heavier, sloppy and raw sounding, which is exactly what I and many others wanted! If you used to spend hours in your room or older friend's car banging your head to "My Own Summer" and "Headup" while getting Slurpee stains in your JNCOs and your product-coated bangs in your mouth, or your shotgun-blast haircut caught in the car door, come back and enjoy this, it has aged well, I promise. Moving on from this tangent, this album is cleaned up compared to Adrenaline, and features more melodic areas while also getting heavier where it needs to. Chino's vocals are crisper and instead of gurgling, spitting or panting awkwardly like he did in a few places on their debut, he utilizes his mutters, whispers, screams and wails in a much stronger fashion. The drums are louder and not so Piccolo snare 'pop-pop' sounding, and have a fuller crunch that it needed for the fuller guitar sound that came too. Terry Date produced both albums, and the obvious similarities are all there, but there is enough of a difference to hear a little maturity and effort overall. "Headup" features Max Cavalera of Sepultura, or better known these days for (ugh) Soulfly or The Cavalera Conspiracy, and is where the basis for Soulfly came from. So thank the song for the audio atrocities that followed in 1998.

Mad Marge & The Stonecutters - Mad Marge & The Stonecutters (2005)

Mad Marge & The Stonecutters are a high-energy rock 'n' roll band that uses lots of rockabilly or psychobilly influences, and can get quite metallic at times too. The strong female vocals are easy to find yourself singing along to and some of the songs have little familiar catches and hooks in the basslines you might recognize from classic rock tunes, maybe even some surf-y ones. This is not up a lot of people's alleys, but it's a relatively short album with fast pacing and if you like anything you can dance fast to, here you go. For fans of Germany's Mad Sin, HorrorPops, The Creepshow, Koffin Kats and Nekromantix.

Deftones - Adrenaline (1995)

The album cover always kept me guessing as to what it was until I got the internet at some point in the late 90's and finally looked it up; a baby aspirator. Rather anticlimactic but the music this album presented has not stopped playing in over 10 years. I remember taking the DC metro in 1997 to see them play with Glassjaw at the Capital Ballroom (now known as Nation) to support their "Around The Fur" album. This album is still considered nu-metal by many, alternative rock, alternative metal-- whatever that means. It's got a sweet sweep-up of rock, metal, melody, aggression, screamed and sung vocals. The piccolo snare used by Abe Cunningham wasn't something I was used to hearing and bugged me for a long while but became a standout feature of the band. The ballads at the end of the record were some of the first I actually liked, and are still to me very beautifully written songs. This sound is lost forever as I lost interest in this band after "White Pony," and no other band could duplicate them (and many, many, many have tried because of how simple most of the Deftones' songs were). Most people might say "Around The Fur" is hands-down their best effort, but I have an attachment to this album above the three I like. I got this as a Christmas present from my aunt Joan during 6th grade, around when she also bought me the live Nirvana album, "From The Muddy Banks Of The Wishkah." I still have and listen to the Deftones CD.

All Out War - For Those Who Were Crucified (2001)

This is another trip down memory lane; Victory Records' hardcore band All Out War was heavy, pissed-off and had a twinge of Slayer to their songs, which, as a high schooler who just discovered Slayer, was one of the coolest combination at the time. I didn't know it at the time, but the cover tunes that come on after "Apocalyptic Terror" are Corrosion Of Conformity's "Mad World" and Cro-Mags' "Life Of My Own," both of which are songs I listen to regularly now. Have a listen to some of the hardcore from some of the better-known 90's hardcore bands who put out a few records before I forgot all about them. If I can acquire it, I will upload their debut, "Truth In The Age Of Lies," which was released in 1997.

Man Or Astro-man? - What Remains Inside A Black Hole (1997)

This album contains one of my favorite covers of The Bel-Airs tune "Squad Car," which is a classic song covered by many, many surf rock bands. If surf music for the most part bores you and you want something with a little more kick, a little more grime and dirt-- this band should do the trick. It's got the great basslines and echoing guitar you'd expect and hopefully want from surf rock music, but it has that spit-shine of sleaze, the way Motörhead adds to rock and metal.

Torn Apart - Ten Songs For Bleeding Hearts (1999)

This isn't a very good hardcore album; in fact by today's standards, it might almost fit in. However, it came over 10 years ago, and at the time, I loved it! Torn Apart was a hardcore band from Baltimore, Maryland that existed from about 1994 to 2001. This was out before it could be labeled metalcore and was nice and pissed off for anyone who was able to find them. At times, sounding like Coalesce, Turmoil-- they played alongside bands at the time like Adamantium, Disembodied, Endeavor, XDiscipleX A.D., Indecision (getting nostalgic yet? Or too young to remember?), and blew minds in the late 90's at many hardcore festivals up and down the east coast. Right when they began to blow up though it seemed they disappeared, and only recently did I see that they had officially disbanded by 2001. Their other releases are nearly impossible to find, so if anyone actually likes this, I can continue searching. This was more a nostalgia trip and a request fulfillment for my brother than anything else. Also, the Guns 'N' Roses cover is absolutely garbage. Not even funny, it's bad.

G.A.T.E.S. - Total Death (2005)

"Total Death" is a compilation of G.A.T.E.S' material from an early demo that was released in 2003 and the rest being songs from a split with another band called Metal Skull. This Japanese four-piece puts out filthy sounding Motörhead-meets-Entombed with some Death Breath in the mix too. This side project featuring members of Japan's most notable stoner metal band Church Of Misery is far more in tune what I like; it's fast-paced, heavy, evil but groovy with a slight upbeat to the overall feel. Extremely catchy, sleazy and memorable stuff. If you think this reminds you of Motörhead, well, there's even a Motörhead cover to top it off. I actually like this a lot more than Motörhead, though.

Battlemaster - Spells, Boots, & Portals (2010)

This quick and most recent offering from Battlemaster is a faster, heavier fondling session and the foreplay before the penetration that is the full-length album that will come. Soon. A crowd hit, "Cursed Boots Of Perpetual Dancing," will have you kicking up dirt like a pit bull and ready to crash into the next JNCO gorilla with long hair over and over. It has a rumbling guitar that goes into a frenzied tornado of black thrash and rolling drums to keep you dancing for four straight minutes, if you can stop there. "Total Aboleth Funeral" has you envisioning an ocean of dead squid-like beasts laid out to be cast into the wind, and "Portal Escape" keeps the speed at the tops while those dancing boots follow you closely. It's short, sweet, and probably the best thing you'll hear for a long while.

Battlemaster - Warthirsting & Winterbound (2007)

Richmond, Virginia has become a hotbed of shining gold heavy metal in the last few years with bands like Inter Arma, Bastard Sapling, Cannabis Corpse and Battlemaster. The years-anticipated full-length this band put out lived up to everyone's expectations and blew them away quite easily; it's got speed, it's got heavy, it's got funny (if you pay attention to the lyrics, vocals or both there's great payoff), the drumming is out of this world and you'll feel like you're hearing Enslaved, Withered, Immortal and Deströyer 666 trying to come up with a supergroup formula but Battlemaster's already got what you want the way you want it. One of the best metal releases of 2007, Richmond metal history; it is the record this band needed to get out there. Get this, buy it if you can, and for the real experience, of course: see them live.

Nuclear Assault - Game Over (1986)

Nuclear Assault's debut album covered all the thrash metal basics: Satan, politics and a paranoid obsession with the post-apocalyptic world. They knew what they were doing going in as all the members were well-aware and very much veterans of the New York thrash metal scene. Danny Lilker, who was a founding member of Anthrax (fired for not paying practice space rent and for being a slob), founded Nuclear Assault as well as other projects like Stormtroopers Of Death (S.O.D.) and went on to play in bands like Brutal Truth and Crucifist. He also made an extremely memorable appearance playing bass with Sigh at last year's Maryland Death Fest for their cover of Venom's "Countess Bathory." Anyway, this has the original thrash formula you've come to know and love, with hilarious songs like "Hang The Pope" and a change of pace like "Brain Death," with seemingly endless riffing towards the end. Whether you think this is "standard" thrash or THE standard, it is always a fun listen and you can see where all of today's thrash clones steal their riffs from. I will upload some Vio-Lence, Overkill, Artillery and even Anthrax to disprove the nonbelievers!

Running Wild - Port Royal (1988)

Though Running Wild didn't intend on being known as a "pirate metal" band, they introduced the idea on their 1987 album "Under Jolly Roger" with a track by the same name, obviously in reference to the most popular pirate symbol on a flag in the wind. That album only had the one song about pirate life but 1988's "Port Royal" reintroduces and expands on the theme. Port Royal itself was known in the 1660s as a haven for buccaneers and prostitutes, and was a place for privateers to safely pass through for trade routes that pirates also used between Spain and Panama. "Calico Jack" is about Calico Jack Rackham, an English pirate from the 18th century. The musical style is influenced heavily by the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal from the late 70's and 80's, and has elements of chunkier speed metal at times (but not really), but can be best described (I guess) as traditional heavy metal. Fans of early 80's Judas Priest, maybe Screaming For Vengeance or Defenders Of The Faith era, may really like this. Fans of Helloween, even Morbid Angel (because of the heavy tuning, and their faster parts are like Morbid Angel's mid-paced parts), Watchtower or Twisted Tower Dire could get into this if they aren't already listening, which would be blasphemy for any power metal fan.

Nasum - Shift (2004)

Nasum's official 'grind finale' before releasing a 'best of' collection under that title, Shift contains some of this band's finest moments ever. From the explosive opener "Particles" and the menacing closer "Darkness Falls," this is not the average stop-and-start grindcore fare. Countless sites and magazines have reviewed this band and this album in particular with tons of praise for different reasons, and you can hear for yourself why this is considering such an important metal record regardless of how recent it is or what genre it is slipped into. Grind is not just Brutal Truth, Bathtub Shitter or Anal Cunt! They also released one of their only official music videos ever through this record for the song "Wrath," which is different for a Nasum song but no less pissed or heavy. R.I.P. Mieszko Talarczyk.

Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet - Sport Fishin' Accessories (1993)

Canadian surf rock trio Shadowy Men From A Shadowy Planet put this promotional-only 5-track mini CD out in 1993 before releasing Sport Fishin': The Lure Of The Bait, The Luck Of The Hook the same year. Best known for providing the opening theme music to "Kids In The Hall," the Canadian sketch comedy show that was reminiscent to "Monty Python's Flying Circus" but far more perverted and gay (and in some ways, rivaling in humor or even funnier). "Having An Average Weekend" is their all-time greatest and biggest hit, but personally I find that "Plastics For 500, Bob" is almost as good; it's faster, catchy and you can see the frantic surfer struggling to keep balance when you crank this song up before he wipes out. Many of their songs were used as interludes between sketches on "Kids In The Hall," this song being one of them. "Having An Average Weekend '78" is the band parodying themselves, putting out a heavily distorted, almost stoner-rock version of the song by the same name. Enjoy this and I will upload a full-length by them soon. They formed in 1984, won a Juno in 1992 (the Canadian equivalent to the Grammys), broke up in 1996 and their bassist, Reid Diamond, died in 2001. Easily one of the best surf rock bands there ever was, as out-of-place-and-time as they were.

Exodus - Bonded By Blood (1985)

Underrated outside of the die-hard thrash fan circle, but anyone who's bothered to listen to this from start to finish knows the influence it's had on bands like Megadeth, Vio-Lence and Slayer, with solos that take you back to Kill 'Em All-era Metallica, PROBABLY due to Kirk Hammet quitting Exodus to join Metallica before this album was released, and leaving a lasting mark on the band for at least this album. Paul Baloff sang only on this and the 1982 demo but is still the most memorable singer this band has ever had.

Testament - The Legacy (1987)

An instant hit in 1987 due to watered-down local thrash buddies Metallica paving the way for them, Testament formed in 1983 and went on to tour almost immediately after releasing this album with Anthrax who were on the road to promote Among The Living. While their newer albums aren't brilliant like their first couple albums, but they have yet to put an honestly bad album. If you want to hear them at the top of their game, get this or the two that follow it.

Megadeth - Rust In Peace (1990)

Megadeth's finest moment; this isn't just my opinion, either. Many agree, few disagree, and everyone has valid points as to why or why not, be that you go by how many "hits" are on one album, to the musicianship to the themes explored to Dave Mustaine's vocal style to the solos to the drumming to the ridiculous "Hangar 18" music video. This is essential to any music lover's collection, I am serious. Marty Friedman and Dave Mustaine together here create a sound not heard on many metal albums; it is marketable but not pop. It is distinct without going near the waters of the dreaded avant-garde tag. Heavy, but not sludgy. Clean recording, but not Bon Jovi (or Metallica's Black Album, ugh). At the risk of sounding very cliche, the first track sets the tone for the rest of the album with an already memorable guitar riff that throws you right into a frenzy of sharp, fast pacing with a song about the Northern Ireland Conflict, then slowing down in the middle abruptly with a theme change into Marvel's "The Punisher." "Tornado Of Souls" is hands down the most magnificent song in this band's entire career and multiple listens will keep you feeling like you heard the best song ever for the first time, every time. Without further ado (as I could go on and on), please, just download the record and listen from start to finish and experience the glory that many others have already been enjoying for two decades.

Manowar - Louder Than Hell (1996)

To celebrate my not being smashed against another car by a car while on my bicycle last night, I am putting up Manowar's 1996 slice of battering metal, "Louder Than Hell." Sure there's some filler, but the standout tracks are excellent enough to warrant constant listens. This is fist-pumping classic heavy metal revived in the 1990's. You can probably delete about half the album and you probably will upon listening to it, but "The Gods Made Heavy Metal" and "Brothers In Metal Pt. 1" will have you fist pumping harder than any Jersey trash could dream of.

After Rob Halford left Judas Priest in 1992 he wanted to venture into other bands and try different genres and styles; this one turned out to be the best and the first of a couple bands he tried out (2wo, Pig, both of which were really bad). Scott Travis from Judas Priest also drummed on the record as well, who has been drumming in Judas Priest since "Painkiller." It is more Pantera-esque than what Halford had typically been playing. Either way, it's awesome, and certainly beat the hell out of the non-Halford-era Priest albums (though "Jugulator" did have some decent songs on it).

Unfortunately, Rob Halford's management have taken measures to prevent songs from their library to appear on Youtube and other video sites, so the best I can do for now is to take you to a site that lets you stream each track individually.

John Parr "St. Elmo's Fire (Man In Motion)" (1985)

In honor of the Olympics, and while sitting in a bar seeing Rick Hansen during one of the opening ceremonies carrying the Olympic Torch, I felt the need to educate the masses on this guy and the brilliant song inspired by him. If you've seen the film, "St. Elmo's Fire," this is nothing new as that song permeated throughout that movie (good movie, too). Rick Hansen is a paralyzed athlete from Canada and after another athlete attempted to raise cancer awareness by rolling via wheelchair from one end of Canada to the other but not succeeding due to cancer-related issues, Hansen decided he would do the same thing while raising awareness for handicapped athletes altogether and going around the world, not just Canada.

I wanted to upload something from my CD collection that a lot of people probably actually don't have so here we go. This is from the reissue of Carcass' magnum opus "Heartwork," originally released in 1993. Re-released in 1998 with remastered tracks, a DVD with in-the-studio stuff and discussing the H.R. Giger art custom-made for this release, Michael Amott's departure, vegetarianism, Parr Street Studios (which is the reason for the long release name), and other stuff. Interesting if you are a fanboy. The Parr Street Studio demo material is great, though. You hear all the tracks from "Heartwork" in often slower tempos, some with different guitar solos. The track listing is different but beyond that it's not wildly different. If you want to see how these 17-18 year old songs were birthed then perfected for the album, take a listen.

These Youtube previews of the songs are AWFUL quality, the actual demo recordings are actually much, much better.

Longer songs, more solos, cleaner sound and John Joseph leaving vocal duty to bassist Harley Flanagan. Although the lyrics are a bit goofy with the Hare Krishna themes, this is a completely solid album. I wish I could find more Youtube or Google Video clips of songs from this album but there were none, or terrible live recordings. This is a low-quality clip I found and certainly not the best track so give it a whirl.

From the icy, chilling intro instrumental through stories about Nordic mythological creatures and characters and cold mountaintops, this is a must-have through-and-through. Yggdrasil (ig-dra-sil) is about a gigantic tree at the center of Norse mythology, also known as Odin's horse. Gylfaginning is about a king who is tricked by the Norse gods, and I think is about the creation and destruction of the world that the gods created. It even says "VIKING METAL" on the back of the inside booklet. Fast as hell at times, melodic at others, not the cleaned-up progressive metal sound their newer fans are used to. The drummer, Trym, joined Emperor after this album.
