Macabre - Murder Metal (2003)

Macabre - Murder Metal

Macabre's most recent release, now six years old, is just as entertaining as when it first dropped. Though they pretty much only play shows around the Chicago area, we can always look forward to them (one day, someday) playing at a festival outside of Illinois. High production value like "Dahmer," an even louder, sharper and violent sound than before, and even more humor, this is it. "Jack The Ripper" is a song comprised completely of a letter said killer sent to the London police. "The Wüstenfeld Man Eater" is about Armin Meiwes, the German cannibal who put a want ad in the newspaper looking for a young man to be eaten, also the subject of a song by Rammstein called "Mein Teil." "The Iceman" is about hired hitman Richard Kuklinski, a Polish guy who couldn't be made by the mob so he was just contracted instead. My favorites off this are "The Hillside Strangers," "The Iceman," "The Wüstenfeld Man Eater" and "Morbid Minister."

Macabre - Sinister Slaughter (1993)

Macabre - Sinister Slaughter

1993's Macabre breakthrough album "Sinister Slaughter," hard for many to access and a favorite among many others. A collection of songs about various killers, murderers, psychopaths and rageaholics throughout time from the Zodiac Killer to Richard Speck to Albert Fish and Charles Whitman. I do not have a single track on here I don't like, but my personal favorite is "Vampire Of Düsseldorf," about Peter Kurten, a serial killer from Germany who struck the hardest in 1929, killing a wide range of people from an 8-year old girl to a middle-aged mechanic and at least 7 others with 9 attempts at murder. He would stab most to death and said at his trial that it was purely of a sexual nature; that the excessive stab wounds on certain victims were because it took longer to achieve an orgasm. Anyways, the song itself has a catchy piano opening and the chorus is also by far the catchiest for me. "Sniper In The Sky" is about Charles Whitman, the man who killed 14 people at the University of Texas in 1966 from the tower and observation deck of an administrative building. I made sure to list which killer each song is about because they are each interesting reads. The album cover is a parody of The Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club," with celebrities' heads replaced by notorious killers. One of my favorite album covers ever. Enjoy!

Macabre - Dahmer (2000)

Macabre - Dahmer

A musical biography of the life of Jeffrey Dahmer. Interesting, funny, morbid, and really good! For those who can appreciate a darkened laugh. Reading up on Dahmer a little can help while listening to this too, as some of the lesser-known references might register faster. Regardless, even if you have no interest in serial killers, Macabre is incredible and the "Sinister Slaughter" and "Murder Metal" albums will be uploaded soon too.

Misery Index - Traitors (2008)

Misery Index - Traitors

Baltimore, Maryland's pride, born from being former members of Dying Fetus, another local outfit playing similar tunes. Over the years Misery Index has gotten more experimental but have stuck to their typical formula for the most part, which is in no way bad. If anything they are faster, tighter and more brutal than ever. The production values have definitely risen and so have their abilities.

Behemoth - Demigod (2004)

Behemoth - Demigod

A rather huge departure from their previous album "Zos Kia Cultus (Here And Beyond)," strengthening their battery of fast, fast blackened death metal. Though already rather popular in the metal underground for that album, this one kickstarted another resurgence in popularity for the band.

Majority Rule - Interviews With David Frost (2001)

Majority Rule - Interviews With David Frost

There's a lot of people in the D.C.-area and Richmond and up and down the east coast that wishes this band never broke up. Tons of people still remember how insane Majority Rule shows were, whether they were playing the show with Darkest Hour, Pg99, City Of Caterpillar, Municipal Waste, whoever. Their music was a blend of extremely heavy with calming center to each song-- it was never quite heavy metal, never quite hardcore, never quite punk. It brought together an interesting audience and everyone went crazy for them whenever they played; the crowd was always whipped into a high-energy frenzy. They formed in 1996 and performed until 2004 with their second and last album, "Emergency Numbers," but "Interviews With David Frost" has something unforgettable about it and all these years after high school, I still blast this record every week.

Sepultura - Arise (1991)

Sepultura - Arise

The album that broke Sepultura through to many fans around the world and follow up to 1989's "Beneath The Remains." They had begun to experiment much more than before with sounds like classic Latin percussion elements, a more punk-ish edge and the pulsating sounds of industrial rock and metal that was gaining popularity at the same time around them. Not many Sepultura fans will choose other Sepultura albums over this one as their pick for the most ambitious and over all great release.

Behemoth - The Apostasy (2007)

Behemoth - The Apostasy

The blasphemous follow-up to their "Demigod," you can expect more extremely intense heavy-as-and-fast-as-hell Polish blackened death here. This is their first album to also chart on the Billboard 200, which depending on who you ask, is good or bad. They put out a music for "At The Left Hand Ov God," which these days is not unusual for a metal band really but for this particular style and genre, having one of such high production when you aren't Amon Amarth is rare. Many song titles refer to Jesus and the desecration of; "Rome 64 C.E." refers to the city of Rome during the time when it had supposedly burned during the Great Fire of Rome, where the apostle Peter and others died, which becomes the direct reference point for "Slaying The Prophets Ov Isa." Isa is the Arabic word for Jesus. "Pazuzu" is about the Babylonian mythological creature of the same name, representative of the southwestern wind, the bearer of disease. "Christgrinding Avenue" refers to the Via Dolorosa, the street in Jerusalem where Jesus carried his cross on his way to the crucifixion as noted in the Stations of the Cross. Enjoy!

Judas Priest - A Touch Of Evil Live (2009)

The fifth live album by Judas Priest, and first since they reunited in 2003. They are in top form here, with great live versions of tunes like "Judas Rising," "Between The Hammer & The Anvil," "Eat Me Alive" and the epic "Painkiller." There are a few newer tracks on here, which in their defense, are the better songs off the disastrous "Nostradamus." This was released on July 14, 2009 and should motivate you to want to see them during this summer tour. Buy this then go buy concert tickets.

Death - The Sound Of Perseverance (1998)

Death - The Sound Of Perseverance

Death's final studio album, thought of as more of a progressive and experimental album than their previous releases with most songs averaging in at the 6-minute mark. It also contains the vastly different and very emotional instrumental "Voice Of The Soul," and their brilliant rendition of Judas Priest's "Painkiller," which shows vocalist Chuck Schuldiner pushing his vocal limits seemingly combining his own voice with that of Rob Halford's, and even throwing in a very unexpected and rare clean vocal ending (and not in a bad way at all). Although most would say without hesitation that "Symbolic" is better, this is still an incredible album to go out on before they released a live album in 2001 to raise funds for Chuck Schuldiner's brain cancer treatment.

White Zombie - Astro Creep 2000 (1995)

White Zombie - Astro Creep 2000

The full title is actually "Astro Creep 2000: Songs Of Love, Destruction And Other Synthetic Delusions Of The Electric Head." Released in 1995, this album was a huge departure from their previous records and has a much heavier, much darker tone to it, also leaving behind the sleazy, mid-to-fast-paced rock 'n' roll metal sound that was present on 1992's "La Sexorcisto." "Astro Creep" had a more stable sound, a far more evil tune to it and the lyrics center more on the Satan, Hell, murder, zombies, and even drawing some inspiration from a movie called "Blade Runner," as presented on the Grammy-nominated "More Human Than Human."

Behemoth - Evangelion (2009)

Behemoth - Evangelion

This is coming out over a month before its street date, so understand the quality may be sub par and the ending sounds like it might have been cut off sooner than it is supposed to. I will certainly be buying this when it comes out August 11! If you liked Behemoth's previous two albums, you will most likely love this one too. It's right up the same alley with intense (tastefully) triggered drumming, demonic vocals and church-crushing guitar blasts.
